A Month of Wisdom from Proverbs – Chapter 2

Seek after Wisdom. Does that sound familiar from yesterday’s post? You will get used to hearing all about wisdom before this month is over. This is day 2 in a month of wisdom from Proverbs – Chapter 2.

You will gain from the benefits of wisdom in this chapter. Solomon is sharing godly wisdom with us here and says, “My child, Listen to what I say, and treasure my commands.” He wants us to tune in, to truly seek after wisdom as something that is highly valuable. The verses liken seeking for wisdom as we would seek for silver and hidden treasures.

Godly Values

What do you find valuable that you would go crazy trying to find? Jesus gave an example for us in Luke 15:8-10

“Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins[a] and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

Luke 15:8-10

So do you seek wisdom like the widow searched for her missing money?

Godly Knowledge & Understanding

Proverbs 2:5 says, THEN we will understand what it means to fear the Lord and gain knowledge of God. We will gain an understanding of truly respecting the Lord. We will learn great things from Him and the wisdom that He gives us.

When we read His word and communicate with Him, He will give us knowledge and understanding directly! He will give us common sense to those of us who are honest. It is this constant communication with Him, because we value His wisdom. We value wisdom in general, from wise people.

When we walk with integrity, He shields us. In other words, He protects us. He guards our paths and protects those of us who are faithful to Him.

The word integrity comes from the same root as the word integer used in math. It means to be whole or complete; not fractured. When we fracture our lives or our worldview, we are no longer whole or complete and are no longer able to have a consistent and full life.

Godly Faithfulness

What does it mean to be faithful to Him when it comes to wisdom?

Wisdom will keep you from evil people. They actually take a lot of joy in doing wrong. Think of the music industry and the movie industry. What is watched is then, often repeated by viewers. Thinking about and lusting, when it has conceived, brings forth sin and sin brings forth death. (James 1:15)

Verses 16-22 describe an adulterous woman who has abandoned her husband. She ignores the covenant that she made with her husband before God. Entering into her house(or wherever), leads him into a terrible position, a place of death. His marriage may very well be over because he reacted to what he saw and was tempted by. He did not follow the path of wisdom that says to not even go near her. Don’t even get close, that way you will not be tempted.

Therefore, follow the path of those who do good! Live a righteous life! Only the godly live in the land that is good and those who have integrity, are going to remain in safety, and live in godliness. The wicked will be removed from the land and the treacherous will be uprooted.
